Jonathan helped Ghana reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea after defeating the hosts 3-0 on Thursday evening.
This will be Jonathan’s second Africa Cup of Nations final after watching from the substitutes bench as Ghana lost to Egypt in the 2010 edition.
Speaking to his official website, the Evian Thonon Gaillard defender expressed his delight at making it into another major final: “I can’t express how proud i am of all the team. I’m delighted to make another African Cup final. We’ve really worked hard to get this far and we know we haven’t achieved anything yet”
“No one gave us a chance before the tournament especially with the group we were in but we believed in ourselves.” the Black Stars defender added.
Ghana face a star-studded Ivory Coast side in a repeat of the 1990 final as both countries aim to end their Africa Cup of Nations winners drought.
“We’re aware of their qualities so we will prepare very well for the game. I’m sure they will do the same in what will surely be a great game. These are the kind of matches and moments that we live for. Now we want to bring the trophy home for our supporters and the people of Ghana.” Jonathan said.
On a night that Ghana should have been celebrating reaching another continental final, it was marred by crowd trouble as the game was halted for over 30mins while Ghana supporters ran for cover.
“It was really an ugly sight. It has been a great tournament so far without any major problems. It’s unacceptable for such things to occur anywhere in the world let alone in a football stadium. I hope all fans are safe and my thoughts are with those who have sustained any injuries.”
